Why Discord asks for a phone number
A Discord account can exist with only an email address, so a phone number is optional for most people. It becomes necessary in a few situations: when a server you want to join requires members to have a verified phone, when Discord's automated systems ask an account to confirm that a real person runs it, and when you want text messages as a backup method for two-factor authentication.
A verified phone number is one of Discord's anti-spam signals. A real mobile number is much harder to obtain in bulk than a new email address, which makes mass account creation more difficult, so many communities rely on it to keep raiders and bots out. For the same reason, Discord does not accept every kind of number, and some virtual or internet-based numbers may be rejected.
A linked phone number can also be used to sign in instead of your email and, if SMS backup is turned on, to receive login codes. These conveniences are worth remembering before you remove the number, because they stop working once it is gone.
Check what depends on the number first
Removing a phone number is quick, but a few things change afterwards. The most important one is two-factor authentication. If you added SMS as a backup method, that backup disappears with the number, so first confirm that your authenticator app still produces working codes and that you know where your backup codes are stored.
Next, think about the servers you belong to. Communities set to the highest verification level only let members post if their account has a verified phone. Once you remove yours, you may find that you can still read those servers but cannot send messages until you add a number again.
Finally, if you normally sign in by typing your phone number, switch to your email address before removing it, and make sure you can still open that inbox. After the change, your email becomes the main way to reset your password and receive security notices.
How to remove the phone number
On desktop or in a browser, open User Settings with the gear icon, go to My Account and find the Phone Number field. Choose Remove, confirm with your account password and follow any extra confirmation step Discord shows. The field then shows that no number is linked.
On mobile, tap your profile picture in the bottom navigation, open settings with the gear icon, choose Account and select the phone entry. Pick the option to remove it and confirm in the same way. Menu names shift slightly between app versions, but the phone setting always sits next to your other account details such as email and password.
If Discord later asks you to verify a phone again, for example after a security check or when you join a server with strict verification, you will need to add a number before continuing. Removing the number is not a way around those checks; it only means Discord no longer keeps a number on your account.
How to switch to a new number
If you simply got a new SIM or changed carriers, replacing the number is usually better than removing it. In the Phone Number field under My Account, choose the option to change it, enter the new number with the correct country code and type in the verification code that Discord sends by text message. You may be asked to confirm your password as well.
A phone number can generally be verified on only one Discord account at a time. If you move a number from an old account to a new one, the old account may lose it, which can affect its access to phone-verified servers and its SMS backup. Plan the move rather than discovering the problem later.
If the code does not arrive, check the country code, make sure the phone has signal and can receive automated texts, and wait a little before requesting another code. Repeated requests can be rate-limited, and some carriers filter automated messages. If the problem continues, use the support form on Discord's official help center.
What server verification levels mean
Server owners choose a verification level in the server's safety settings. The lowest levels impose no requirement or only ask for a verified email address. Middle levels add waiting periods, such as requiring an account to have existed for a short time, or to have been a member of the server for a few minutes, before it can post. The highest level requires a verified phone number.
As a member, this explains why a server can suddenly ask you to verify a phone: the owner may have raised the level after a raid or a spam wave. You can usually still read the channels, but sending messages stays blocked until you meet the requirement.
If you run a server, use the strictest level only when you really need it. It works well against throwaway accounts, but it also shuts out genuine members who cannot or prefer not to share a phone number. Many communities combine a moderate level with AutoMod filters and a rules screen, and raise the level temporarily during an attack.
Keeping two-factor authentication strong without SMS
Two-factor authentication on Discord is built around an authenticator app, and SMS is only an optional extra. That is good news if you want to remove your number: an app-generated code is harder to intercept than a text message, because it cannot be redirected by someone who persuades a carrier to move your number to a new SIM card.
To stay protected without SMS, keep your authenticator app on a device you control, store your backup codes somewhere safe and offline, and use a password manager to keep a long, unique password. Where Discord offers security keys on your platform, adding one gives you another strong way to sign in.
Review the Devices section of your settings from time to time and sign out of any session you do not recognize. If you ever receive a login alert you did not trigger, change your password straight away and check the email and phone fields for changes you did not make.
Accounts that still carry someone else's number
If you received or bought an account, it may still be linked to the previous owner's phone number. Replace it with your own as soon as possible, together with the email address and password, and set up two-factor authentication with your own authenticator app, because a number you do not control is a way back into the account for someone else. Follow Discord's terms of use whenever you take over or use an account.
On rStock, Discord-related items are sold by independent stores that the platform has approved, and each listing is reviewed before it is published. rStock is the platform, not the seller, and it is not affiliated with Discord. After you pay from your rStock balance, the delivered details appear on your order page as a delivery record linked to the order.
The payment is held instead of going to the store at once, and you have a limited window after delivery to open a dispute. The store responds first, and a moderator can step in if you cannot agree. Checking a store's rating, sales count and insurance balance before buying is a sensible habit.
