From the green badge to the verified checkmark

For a long time, a green checkmark next to a business name in WhatsApp was the sign that the account belonged to a real, well-known brand. Many people still search for the green tick, but Meta has since brought WhatsApp in line with its other apps, and verified businesses now show a blue checkmark in the same style used on Facebook and Instagram.

Whatever its color, the badge means that WhatsApp or Meta has confirmed the account is operated by the business whose name it shows. How a business gets it depends on which WhatsApp product it uses and on the country it operates in, because verification programs are not available everywhere.

This guide explains the main routes in general terms. Program names, requirements and availability change, so always confirm the current details in the app or in Meta's official business help pages before you apply.

WhatsApp Business app or WhatsApp Business Platform

WhatsApp offers two main products for companies. The WhatsApp Business app is a free app aimed at small businesses. It runs on a phone, with linked devices for use on a computer, and adds a business profile with an address, opening hours, a description and a website, along with a product catalog, chat labels, quick replies and automatic greeting and away messages.

The WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the API, is built for medium and large companies that need to message at scale, connect WhatsApp to a customer service system or run chatbots. It is not a phone app in the usual sense; businesses connect through Meta directly or through a business solution provider, and it comes with its own policies and pricing.

The distinction matters because the verification paths differ. Businesses on the app usually look at Meta Verified, while businesses on the platform have traditionally applied for official business account status through Meta's business tools. Knowing which product you use is the first step.

Meta Verified for businesses on WhatsApp

Meta Verified for business is a paid subscription that Meta offers to businesses on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp in selected countries, and which countries qualify varies. For eligible businesses on the WhatsApp Business app, it adds a verified badge once Meta has confirmed the identity of the business.

Besides the badge, the program has generally included protection against accounts that impersonate the business and access to enhanced account support. The exact benefits differ by app and region and may change, so compare the current list shown in the app with what you actually need before subscribing.

If the option is available to you, it normally appears in the WhatsApp Business app settings or in Meta's business tools. If you cannot find it, the program is most likely not offered in your country yet, and no third party can unlock it for you.

Verification on the WhatsApp Business Platform

For businesses using the platform, the traditional route has been official business account status, requested through WhatsApp Manager in Meta's business tools. Approval is not automatic: Meta looks for a notable brand that people actively search for and asks for supporting evidence such as independent news coverage, not paid or promotional articles.

Before requesting it, the business normally needs to complete Meta business verification, which confirms the company's legal name, address and other details with official documents. The phone number should have two-step verification turned on, and the display name must follow WhatsApp's naming guidelines and clearly relate to the business.

Meta has been aligning its verification programs across products, so the options shown in your account may differ from older guides. If a request is declined, you can usually apply again later after strengthening your public presence or your documentation.

How to prepare your business

Whichever route applies, verification is easier when your public presence is consistent. Use the same business name on your WhatsApp profile, website, Facebook page, Instagram account and official registration documents. If you trade under a name that differs from your legal name, make the link between the two clear on your website to avoid delays.

Complete your WhatsApp business profile with a real address or service area, opening hours, a description and a link to your official website. Make sure the website shows the same phone number you use on WhatsApp, so customers and reviewers can confirm the connection between them.

Secure the account before you apply. Turn on two-step verification with a PIN, keep the phone number under the company's control rather than on an employee's personal SIM card, and use linked devices or team access instead of passing one phone around. Protect the email address and the Meta business account connected to it with two-factor authentication as well.

What the checkmark means for customers

For customers, the badge answers one question: is this account really run by the business it claims to be? It does not mean that WhatsApp endorses the company, vouches for its products or will settle disagreements with it. Treat a verified business like any other seller and judge its offers on their merits.

Plenty of genuine businesses have no badge, either because the programs are not available in their country or because they have not applied. In that case, check that the number matches the one on the company's official website, and be careful with accounts that copy a brand's logo and name but use an unfamiliar number. WhatsApp marks business accounts, so you can open the business profile and review its details before sharing anything.

Whether an account is verified or not, never share one-time codes, passwords or card details in a chat, and be suspicious of urgent requests to pay or to open a link.

Avoid verification scams and keep your badge

Because the badge carries trust, it attracts scams. Be wary of agencies or individuals who promise a checkmark for a fee, claim special access to Meta or ask for your verification codes to handle the process. Genuine verification is requested through official WhatsApp and Meta tools, either by you or by a business solution provider you have contracted, and nobody can skip Meta's review.

A badge belongs to a specific verified business. It cannot legitimately be bought along with a phone number or moved to a different company, and changing key details such as the display name can trigger a new review or remove the badge. If you use WhatsApp accounts for your business, follow WhatsApp's terms of use and its business and commerce policies at all times. rStock is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta, and those names belong to their owners.
